no binding. Condition: very good. Attila, known as "the Scourge of God," was a formidable ruler of the Huns whose military campaigns left an indelible mark on the history of the 5th century. His epithet, "Scourge of God," encapsulates the dread and devastation associated with his conquests, particularly against the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Attila's forces were renowned for their ruthlessness, pillaging, and ravaging of the lands they conquered. The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451 stands as a pivotal moment where a coalition of Roman and Germanic forces managed to halt Attila's advance, though his legacy persisted. The title has endured in historical and literary accounts, symbolizing the terror and destructive force unleashed by Attila's Huns and their role in contributing to the decline of the Western Roman Empire. His death in 453 marked the end of an era, but the impact of Attila's reign continues to reverberate in the annals of ancient history. Abstract
Ulpiano Checa (1860-1916), one of the most influential painters of the end of the 19th century and, today, completely forgotten, kept in his Paris home an archeological collection adapted to the bourgeois and the intellectual fashion of his time. Checa excelled among his contemporaries because of his interest in the past, which was reflected in his historical paintings that permeated the classical aesthetics in operas, theatre and films. For this reason, Checa is extremely important within the History of Archaeology. Rescuing his artistic legacy was the village where he was born and, in 1956, the city of Colmenar de Oreja (Madrid) began negotiations with the sons of the painter to open a museum, named after him, with a small but valuable donation. The Museum was inaugurated in 1960. Since then, the Museo Ulpiano Checa has not stopped growing, with the last extension opening in 2009 as a useful and attractive museum for modern times.
