Simon Guggenheim
American businessman and politician (1867–1941)
John Simon Guggenheim (December 30, 1867 – November 2, 1941) was an American businessman, politician and philanthropist.
Early life and education
[edit]Guggenheim was born in Philadelphia of Jewish descent on December 30, 1867,[1] the son of Meyer Guggenheim and Barbara Guggenheim, and was the younger brother of Daniel Guggenheim and Solomon R. Guggenheim. He attended Central High School and the Peirce School of Business Administration, both in Philadelphia.[2]
Career
[edit]After graduating from Peirce School of Business Administration, Guggenheim relocated to Pueblo, Colorado, where he worked as the chief ore buyer at M. Guggenheim's Sons, his father's mining and smelting company.
In 1898, he was the Republican candidate for Governor of Colorado, but withdrew after riots broke out at the state convention in Colorado Springs, during which one man was killed and several injured.[3] He was a presidential elector in 1904.[4]

Biographie
[modifier | modifier le code]Né à Philadelphie, il est le fils de Meyer Guggenheim et l'avant-dernier des frères de Benjamin Guggenheim et Solomon R. Guggenheim. Simon Guggenheim s'installe à Denver et est sénateur républicain du Colorado de 1907 à 1913. Durant son mandat de sénateur, il est également président de U.S. Senate Committee to Establish a University of the United States, comité qui n'aboutira pas.
De 1919 à 1941, il est le président de l'American Smelting and Refining Company.
Il épouse Olga Hirsh. À la suite du décès de leur fils en 1922, peu avant que ce dernier n'entre à l'université, Simon et Olga Guggenheim fondent la Fondation John-Simon-Guggenheim, qui récompense des chercheurs et des artistes. Les Guggenheim donnent de l'argent aussi à des nombreuses institutions du monde de l'éducation.
