With a single phone call in 2005, Washburn football coach Craig Schurig forever changed the staffing situation of a DIRECTV store in Miami.
He also forever changed the life of one self-described angry young man.
Cary Williams, the 2007 All-America cornerback from Washburn who went on to help the Baltimore Ravens win the 2013 Super Bowl, expressed profound gratitude Saturday morning to Schurig and the entire WU community for altering his life journey and attitude during a ceremony welcoming him and three other Ichabod greats into the Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame.
"Everybody at Washburn is part of my success," said Williams, who was joined in the 2018 induction class by former defensive backfield teammate Fletcher Terrell and former women's standouts Tessa (Jones) Arndorfer (volleyball) and Jill (Fischer) Miller (softball). "It's been an awesome, awesome experience for me."
Williams' collegiate football journey actually started in 2004 at Fordham, a Football Championship Series program in New York, but it ended after a single season during which he played sparingly in only nine games.

Cary Eric Williams (born December 23, 1984) is an American former professional football player who was a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Washburn Ichabods and was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft.
Williams also played for the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Redskins.
Early life
[edit]Williams is the son of Calvin and Trina Golson. He played as a wide receiver and defensive back at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida as a senior, after attending Coral Gables High School as a junior and Charles W. Flanagan High School as a freshman and sophomore. In addition to football, Williams was also a star in track & field. He was one of the state's top sprinters, with personal-best times of 48.81 seconds in the 400-meter dash and 14.09 seconds in the 110 metres hurdles.[1]
