Matthew M. Williams
Raised in California, Chicago-born creative director Matthew M. Williams has worked with top talents from the worlds of art, music, and fashion throughout his decade-long career, shaping a refined aesthetic universe grounded in street culture. His discerning eye and dynamic work ethic has shaped visual projects through print, digital and live experiences with British photographer Nick Knight.
A keen interest in the creative process of fashion led Williams towards extensive research and development in garment construction, informing his label 1017 ALYX 9SM. Launched in 2015 as ALYX, the comprehensive ready-to-wear and accessories brand harnesses inspirations from his California youth and global urban subcultures, fused with Williams’ experience within the entertainment industry to inform a unique insider perspective. Focusing on craftsmanship, technique, and sustainable fabrication, the brand presents full mens and women’s collections that seek to unite technical innovation with human emotion. In 2016, 1017 ALYX 9SM was selected as a finalist for the LVMH prize. Williams has designed sell-out collaborations with Nike, and develops accessories with Kim Jones for Dior menswear. In 2019, Williams presented 1017 ALYX 9SM's first Moncler Genius collection.

I have made stuff for as long as I can remember. Initially I began as a sculptor, getting a Bachelors degree from Sheffield Hallam university and going on to gain a Masters degree in Digital Media & Arts.
Professional work then took over for some time, and the personal creative work waned. Since 1999 I have worked as a graphic and web designer and I’m currently working at a creative agency just outside London.
This year I decided to pick up with my personal practice again – I started doodling & painting for fun – getting involved on Flickr and Society 6 – and things have really taken off.
I try not to pigeonhole my work – I just love making stuff & keeping it interesting & eclectic …
