After Hernández’s true name and age were revealed (he had also claimed to be three years younger than he really was), Hernández missed much of the season due to lack of a valid visa, followed by a suspension from MLB for identity fraud. He returned to the league in with the Tampa Bay Rays. Coincidentally, while playing as Fausto Carmona for the Cleveland Indians in , Hernández had a teammate whose name was also Roberto Hernández.
