In a world of increasingly large trading blocks, Canada must do whatever it can to help develop the economies of Latin America, according to Dr. Reuben Mapletoft of the University of Saskatchewan.

Mapletoft is a professor of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology (reproductive biology) with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and has worked with South American groups for the last 10 years. In that time, links between the UofS have grown from initial contacts to joint research ventures, technology transfer and professional training.
In-vitro fertilization techniques developed for cattle in Canada are being applied to various species such as goats, llamas and alpacas. These new uses are being pursued by Latin Americans trained at the UofS.
